Studio Work from last Quarter

I know that a post about my trip to Cambodia is long overdue but I really need to post this work and get feedback from people. Don’t be shy. Key themes in my work: pattern, nature, claiming space, mimicry, and camouflage.

This piece is about 24″ x 36″ is size, so it’s what I call a small scale study for my larger work. It all starts with a photograph of a pattern I find in nature and as that motif gets more and more designed it becomes simpler and simpler. I incorporated photography, gouache painting, screenprinting, and digital printing in this work on paper.

This work is approximately 5′x 9′. The next step for me is to work more on the areas of transition, and start to morph the final “designed” patterns back down to other patterns occurring in nature…so on and so forth until it encompasses an entire room, claiming it so to speak. I’ll probably be working a relatively smaller this quarter, since I’ll working mostly on my research so get ready for some theory…

Trip Postponed

Well, i was supposed to depart Savannah on my way to Bangkok this morning. I along with 12 other schoolmates and two professors are embarking on a two week Off-Campus Trip to Thailand and Cambodia. The purpose of the trip is to experience hands on learning about the processes of globalization and the role of artisan production within the global marketplace. Unfortunately at this time, the airport in Bangkok is closed due to a large group of anti-government protestors occupying the main terminal. Read more about this here. A few phone calls to NWA later, I am now leaving on Dec 6th. Despite these unfortunate events, I am still very excited about the trip! I have never been to Asia before and i am really looking forward to new experiences! and food!

Wallpaper

Since my work seems to be taking shape on the wall I have been thinking about wallpaper a lot lately. I like the idea of wallpaper that is interactive, taking the viewer beyond just viewing the work. Check out this fun wallpaper by Hanna Nyman!

Gallery 2514

So I had a little show in the hallway of my house. It went pretty well, it was great to be able to show some people the next stage of my collage. I have decided to take what I have learned from this one and start  new one. I am also going to be designing some fabrics based on the ideas in the collage.

Bra Fundraiser

Last week I made a purse out of an old bra and some fun fabrics for a local fundraiser to raise money for mammograms for women in low income situations. The Auction was held at The Sentient Bean on tuesday night from 6-8pm and my bra was one of the first to sell!

Here I am working on the bra…notice my cute little kitty by my side!

Growing Vines

well, I have been finding various different kinds of vines all over Savannah and have started to try and grow them for personal observation and experimentation. my potted vines are doing pretty well, recently I have added some fabric strips to the fence they will soon be creeping up to find out if they will actually attach themselves to it. i have also been trying to grow some snippings of vines in jars filled with water, but they don’t seem to be doing very well….any tips?

Vertical Gardens

As you may or may not know…i have been researching the history of gardens and garden design while I have been developing my latest work. I have always been drawn to plants and flowers and I have made a connection to patterns occurring naturally in nature to my love of pattern design. gardens are full of patterns….even the layout of a designed landscape evokes the idea of a repeat pattern. One of my latest findings are these vertical gardens or Le Mur Vegetal in French. I think that this type of garden will become more and more popular for city dwellers who crave a sense of environment in their life. I luckily have a balcony that is smothered in plants right now…but the summer sun is unfortunetly fading away…perhaps a vertical garden is somewhere in my near future…Here are some examples…

All of these are works by Patrick Blanc , a French agronomist. check out this interview on how he makes these wonderful structures!
